Two questions for you guys, fully unrelated:

1) Do you tip when you go somewhere to eat and it’s the thing where you order at a counter, pay, then go sit down and wait for them to bring out your food? It’s not common around here but when I travel it seems a lot of places are like this, and there’s always the ‘tip’ prompt on the receipt.

2) I just got back from a wee k-long work trip with a coworker who suddenly became very sick mid-week. Shortly after we got back (he must have gone straight to the doctor from the airport) he texted me that he has strep. Odds I wak e up tomorrow favoring death?

1. Yes but not 15-20% more like a dollar or two.

2. Yeah you are going to die from strep.

1) yup, but smaller percentage, like 10ish.

2) You might get lucky, but according to the magic 8 ball: death is imminent.

Man, that’s a weird 8-ball response. Mine usually just says “Reply hazy , try again”

1) Those situations I tend to tip about a dollar. Paying cash I just round up.

2) D id you share drinks? Kiss? Did they cough directly in your open mouth ? You’re probably fine if it hasn’t hit already. Be preemptive and use lots of hand sanitizer and down a bottle of NyQuil

Nope, we were only really in close proximity in the rental car (since this is oppo, it was a new ranger - short review is that it needs less cab and about half as many gears). When I got home and saw his text, I immediately wiped down everything I had with me with some lysol wipes and drank a glass of that “emergen-C” stuff that’s supposed to make you not get sick through the magic of vitamin C . If I have any sort of symptom in the morning I may call the doctor and explain the situation, see if they can test for it that early and if so maybe head it off.

Agreed with 1 here. Usually if you pay with card, they’ll have an option to tip, I just do 10-15%. Cash, I round up. usually is the same.

Honestly; I always tip the same... I don’t see it as some sort of encouragement of good service as much as a tax I have to pay since restaurant managers don’t pay their staff enough.

You could always ask them... Whenever I’m in a country where the tip is different (here in Mexico it’s typically 15 -20%) I ask servers and they’re  truthful when compared with the internet

1) usually between one and three bucks depending on the total. Not 20% like a full service place, usually like 10%

2) you’ll be fine. Probably.

1. No, I don’t consider that tipping that demands service (unless they are delivering to my house). In a restaurant it seems like nothing. I mean McDonald’ s does it.

2. No sense worrying about it, just get a good night’s sleep and hope for the best.

1) if there’s a tip jar, I’ll put in a couple bucks, if there’s a prompt on the receipt, same. I’m not doing 20% and probably not doing anything if there’s not something to indicate that tips are being sought.

2 ) Depending on how fastidious you are generally about germs and hand washing, maybe as high as  3 /1o

1. Yes, you should always tip if given the chance and shame cheap assholes when given the chance.

2. Drink lots of water and grab some vitamin C

1. I typically don’t, but most of the places I’ve been to like that are barely above fast food (if that).

2. Depends on how much you were together and how close . And on whether or not you already had something that left you a little vulnerable even if you might not have felt sick .

1) No, I don’t. And in  traditional tipping situations I’m quite a good tipper. I’ve lived on tips, and know what it’s like. In the places you’re describing, the “ser vers” are not paid tip wages like regular wait staff or delivery drivers.

2) You’ll probably be fine ... Probably

1) Sometimes, but I also have that question. I feel like if I tip anything less than 20% someone from The Takeout will come and shout at me. My real question is are they getting paid as tipped employees? I f so the best solution would be to stop going to that establishment.

2) Depends, but probably not.
